Subarachnoid osteoma of the right frontal lobe: A case report

Background: Intracranial osteoma (ICO), arising from none-osseous tissue and surrounding by brain parenchyma, is extremely rare.

Case presentation: We report an ICO surgical case of none heterotopic ossification risk factor in a 32 years old female who presented the chief complaint was headache, vertigo and weakness. Preoperative neuroimaging examination revealed a sphere-like, calcified intracranial lesion in the right frontal region. The bone-hard mass was completely removed by right frontal craniotomy, adhesion and invasion of skull inner plate and dura was not found. The subarachnoid lesion was surrounded by right middle frontal gyrus, and the blood supply was from the branches of pia mater. Postoperative histological stain examination suggested an extensive intracranial ossification. Six months follow-up indicated a good recovery without any neurological deficits and recurrence.

Conclusions: A rare surgical case of subarachnoid osteoma was detailed presented. Comprehensive preoperative neuroradiological examinations, accurate surgical management of adjacent brain tissue and vessels protection are the cornerstones of the successful resection.
