The present invention relates to the obesity-curative or obesity-preventive effect of a Polygonum cuspidatum butanol fraction and a Polygonum cuspidatum ethylacetate fraction, and more particularly, to a pharmaceutical composition and a functional food for treating obesity, the pharmaceutical composition and the functional food comprising a Polygonum cuspidatum butanol fraction (POCU-1b) and an ethylacetate fraction as active ingredients, wherein the Polygonum cuspidatum butanol fraction and the ethylacetate fraction inhibit effectively the activity of pancreatic lipase, an important enzyme involving in fat absorption in a living body, and have excellent inhibitory effect on fat absorption in the short term fat absorption-inhibitory animal experiments using lipid emulsions.

Compositions and functional foods for treating and preventing obesity using polygonum cuspidatum butanol fraction and ethyl acetate fraction

Dislcosed are methods and compositions for producing weight loss in a mammal by administration of a composition containing a weight loss effective amount of a noradrenaline stimulating compound such as ephedrine, mahuang (a plant source of ephedrine alkaloids), citrus aurantium (bitter orange), synephrine, norephedrine, psuedophedrine, a methylxanthine, such as caffeine or guarana, and a botanical COX inhibitor such as resveratrol polygonum cuspidatum, scutellaria baicalensis, turmeric, curcumin, rosmary, green tea, ocimum sanctum (holy basil), or ginger, instead of an NSAID such as aspirin, and optionally a free fatty acid reducing compound. The thermogenic formula is coupled with a growth hormone stimulating formulation containing L-arginine or L-omithine, L-lysine, and a free fatty acid reducing agent such as nicotinic acid. The thermogenic formula would preferably be administered in the daytime, and the growth hormone producing formula at nighttime. The two compositions form a system of AM and PM weight loss strategy for the therapeutic intervention of obesity.

Methods and compositions for producing weight loss

Processes for the separation and purification of polyphenol trans-resveratrol and/or anthraquinone emodin from Polygonum cuspidatum and/or Rumex acetosa, by means of solvent selective extraction. Products obtained by this process present high level of purity; being therefore useful in the preparation of nutraceutical (pharmaceutical and/or food) compositions with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, chemoprotective activities, besides protecting against infections and ischemia, treating type 1 and 2 diabetes, reducing obesity and preventing aging. Useful phytomedicines for the same therapeutic activity and prepared from the roots and/or rhizomes of Rumex acetosa or from their fractions are also provided.
