The non polar extract of Centaurea pannonica (Heuff.) Simonk., growing wild in Serbia, was studied and twenty-five compounds including 14 sesquiterpene lactones, 7 flavonoids, 3 lignans and 1 phenylpropanoid glycoside were isolated. All compounds were isolated for the first time from this species.
From CENTAUREA STOEBE the following compounds have been isolated: cnicin, salonitenolide, salonitenolid-8- O-(4'-acetoxy-5'-hydroxyangelate), stoebenolide, 3-hydroxy-2-methylbutyrolactone, and 3-(3, 4-dihydroxy-5-methoxyphenyl)-prop-1-yl 3-hydroxy-11-methyloctadecanoate.
In vitro cultures were initiated from a single seed of Centaurea davidovii. Whole plantlets were regenerated and cultivated for several months on agar-solidified nutrient media differing by their composition: basal MS medium, MS medium supplemented with plant growth regulators, and liquid MS medium.
Ten sesquiterpene lactones, 8alpha-O-(3,4-dihydroxy-2-methylenebutanoyloxy)sonchucarpolide (4-epi-malacitanolide) (1), 8alpha-O-(4-acetoxy-2-hydroxymethylbuten-2-oyloxy)-4-epi-sonchucarpolide (2), malacitanolide (3), its 4'-acetyl derivative (4),
