Additional amounts of ascorbic acid, an ascorbic acid ester, an ascorbic acid salt, butylated hydroxyanisole, butylated hydroxytoluene, hydrogen sulfide, hypophosphorous acid, monothioglycerol, potassium bisulfite, propyl gallate, sodium bisulfite, sodium hydrosulfite, sodium thiosulfate, sulfur dioxide, sulfurous acid, a tocopherol, or vitamn E may be added to the extract to inhibit the natural oxidation of the NDGA into the toxic NDGA quinone in vivo, or during processing or storage. The resulting extract is useful in the treatment of viral diseases caused by viruses from the Herpesviridae family or viruses which require the Sp1 class of proteins to initiate viral replications. The resulting compound can also be used as an anti-inflammatory when the inflaatory diseases are mediated by the effects of leukotrienes. The listed reducing agents can also be used to stabilize NDGA as a therapeutic agent or a food additive.
