OBJECTIVE
The laryngeal cough reflex and the laryngeal cough expiratory reflex are brainstem reflexes that protect the upper airway from significant aspiration. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of tartaric acid-induced cough on pulmonary function in normal healthy and
OBJECTIVE
To study motor activation patterns of voluntary and reflex cough adjusted for cough flow rates.
METHODS
Surface electromyography (EMG) and cough flow rate were measured in 10 healthy volunteers. Voluntary cough was assessed for 20 efforts in each quintile of increasing cough flow rate.
The reflex cough test is useful for detecting silent aspiration, a risk factor for aspiration pneumonia. However, assessing the risk of aspiration pneumonia requires measuring not only the cough reflex but also cough strength. Currently, no reflex cough testing device is available that can directly
