It is postulated that, in the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, independent mosaic pleiotropic action of the mutant gene on morphogenesis and histogenesis produces primary malformations of midline and nonmidline structures and dysplasias more or less highly predisposed to cancer development.
