OBJECTIVE
In the present study two medicinal herbs Linum persicum and Euphorbia cheiradenia that are native to Iran were tested for their possible anticancer effect and induction of apoptosis on human tumor cell lines including leukemia cell lines.
METHODS
The effect of methanolic extracts of the
Justicidin B, an arylnaphthalene lignan, has strong cytotoxicity on chronic myeloid and chronic lymphoid leukemia cell lines. The first report of the production of justicidin B in a Linum species concerned in vitro culture of Linum austriacum. Therefore, culture characterization and presence of
Callus and hairy root cultures of Linum leonii were established. The genetic transformation in hairy roots was proven by PCR analysis, which showed integration of rol A and rol C genes into the plant genome. Calli and hairy roots accumulate the arylnaphthalene lignan justicidin B as a major
BACKGROUND
The present study aimed at optimization of the biotechnological production of the lignan justicidin B by genetically transformed cultures of Linum leonii and the pharmacological evaluation of the pro-apoptotic effects of the compound in HL-60 cells.
METHODS
A rapidly growing selected root
Adverse effects and drug resistance to the current onchopharmacologicals have increased the demand for alternative novel therapeutics. We herein introduce justicidin B, an arylnaphthalen lignan isolated from different plant origins, especially Justicia, Phyllanthus, Haplophyllum and Linum species.
