A method for treating a cancer includes administering to a subject in need thereof a pharmaceutical composition containing a therapeutically effective amount of an antibiotic drug or a pharmaceutical acceptable salt thereof. The antibiotic drug is selected from the group consisting of an aminoglycoside antibiotic drug, an anti-fungal antibiotic drug, a Cephalosporin antibiotic drug, a .beta.-propionamide antibiotic drug, a chloramphenicol antibiotic drug, an erythromycin antibiotic drug, a penicillin antibiotic drug, and a tetracycline antibiotic drug.. The cancer is selected from the group consisting of lung cancer, gastrointestinal tract cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer, and blood cancer.

Methods are provided for isolating and using a whole-saliva leech extract. The methods can include feeding a phagostimulatory agent to a leech; inducing a regurgitation in the leech, the inducing including placing the leech in an environment having a temperature of less than about 0.degree. C.; and, collecting an unrefined, whole saliva in the regurgitation of the cooled leech. The methods can include revitalizing the leech by warming it at a temperature ranging from about 5.degree. C. to about 40.degree. C. Stable, lyophilized, whole-saliva extracts of a leech are also provided, the extract having a stable activity when stored for use at a temperature below about -20.degree. C., the extract maintaining at least 70% of the activity for at least 6 months. The extracts can be used to treat solid tumors, treat liquid tumors, treat diabetes, treat a viral disease, treat a parasitic disease, treat an antibacterial disease, or serve as an anti-oxidant.

Method of inhibiting cancer growth

The invention is a method of inhibiting cancer growth, by inhibiting cellular proliferation, invasiveness, or metastasis, or by inducing cytotoxicity against cancer in mammals. The method employs 6-demethyl-6-deoxy-4-de(dimethylamino)tetracycline (CMT-3) and other functionally related chemically modified, preferably non-antibacterial, tetracycline compounds to inhibit cancer growth. The method is particularly effective to inhibit the establishment, growth, and metastasis of solid tumors, such as tumors derived from colon cancer cells, breast cancer cells, melanoma cells, prostatic carcinoma cells, or lung cancer cells.
