A surgical method for reconstruction of the umbilicus in patients with bladder exstrophy is described. The technique is based on the surgical principle of eventual tubularization of a skin strip buried in the subcutaneous space.

In babies born with bladder exstrophy, the umbilicus is caudally displaced, and attached to the upper margin of the exstrophied bladder. Reconstructive surgery often removes the navel. A surgical technique for preservation and repositioning of the umbilicus is presented.

OBJECTIVE A range of surgical techniques have been described to create a new umbilicus in children with bladder exstrophy. We present a detailed video demonstrating our technique for the creation of a new umbilicus. METHODS The position of the planned umbilicus and flap were marked on the abdomen.

Reconstruction of the umbilicus has cosmetic and functional value in the surgical treatment of the child with bladder exstrophy. We report on 12 patients who underwent creation of a neoumbilicus as part of genitourinary reconstruction.
