Clostridium difficile (CD) is a gram positive, spore forming anaerobic bacillus that is not a normal commensal of the gastrointestinal tract. It was initially named "difficult clostridium" because it was difficult to isolate and grow on culture media. CD can exist in spore and vegetative forms.
