A process for determining the level of TAG in a sample of body fluid which comprises reacting the TAG in a sample of body fluid with an AG-binding lectin or L-fucose-binding lectin to form a TAG-lectin complex and measuring the amount of the TAG-lectin complex or an unreacted lectin is disclosed. The process shows low cross-reactivity with hepatic diseases and is useful for diagnosis of cancers.

A nutritional composition and method is provided in which telomerase expression can be safely activated in living cells. The nutritional composition can induce TERT mRNA or h-TERT mRNA and telomerase in vitro and in vivo while at the same time inhibiting potential side effects, helping to prevent certain types of cancer, and slowing the growth of any cancer cells that may exist in vivo. The method entails exposing cells to L-carnosine concentrations in the range of 51-100 mM or to a combination of L-carnosine and L-fucose in which the concentration of L-carnosine is 30-100 mM and the concentration of L-fucose is in the range from 0.1 micromolar to 100 mM.

Nutritional activation of telomerase in vitro and in vivo with increased safety

An antiretroviral composition for inhibiting the action of reverse transcriptase include a nucleoside analog containing a six-carbon levo hexose sugar, for example, L-rhamnose or L-fucose. Treatment is achieved by delivering the antiretroviral to the infected system, wherein the reverse transcription process is inhibited via steric hindrance, halting the viral RNA replication. Delivery may be accomplished by conventional methods, such as via oral dosing or injection. Additional delivery methods are also contemplated, including packaging in liposomes and protein targeting. The composition and method are also useful for inhibiting the proliferation of cancer cells by halting the transcription process.

Compounds which bind to selectin receptors and thus may modulate the course of inflammation, cancer and related processes by intervening with cell-cell adhesion events. Further, such compounds can be used for identification and analysis of such receptors. In this regard the invention is directed to compounds of formula (I). ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is independently H, alkyl, aryl, an aryl alkyl, alkenyl or one or more additional saccharide residues; R.sup.2 =H or OH provided that when R.sup.2 is H, R.sup.3 is OH; R.sup.3 =H or OH provided that when R.sup.3 is H, R.sup.2 is OH; X=H, SO.sub.3.sup.- or PO.sub.4.sup.- ; Y is independently H, OH, OR.sup.4 or NHCOR.sup.4, wherein R.sup.4 is alkyl, and Z is an organic acid residue. .alpha.-L-Fucose residue can be modified or replaced with suitable bioisosters or a different saccharide residue such as D-mannose. Modification of L-fucose may include replacement of each or all of the hydroxyl groups with H or OR' wherein R' can be methyl, ethyl or allyl groups.
