The regulation by adenylates of activities of various partial electron transport systems in spinach chloroplasts was studied using systems from H2O to 2,5-dimethyl-p-benzoquinone, H2O to 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol, reduced 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol to methyl viologen, and H2O to methyl viologen
Ammonium chloride, an uncoupler of photophosphorylation which stimulates the membrane-bound chloroplast coupling factor ATPase when added after light/dithiothreitol activation, causes a decrease in the number of extra water oxygens incorporated into the phosphate formed during ATP hydrolysis. This

Initial products of photophosphorylation with AMP and [32P]Pi.

The role of AMP in photophosphorylation was studied using rapid mixing acid quench techniques. Fragmented spinach chloroplast membranes or subchloroplast particles were illuminated and rapidly mixed with [32P]orthophosphate and AMP at pH 7 for 10 ms to 60 s after which time perchloric acid was added
The effects of guanylates and inosinates (and adenylates) on phosphorylation, ferricyanide reduction, and light-induced H+ uptake in spinach chloroplasts were studied. GDP, GTP, IDP, and ITP (but not GMP and IMP) stimulated the light-induced H+ uptake and partially inhibited ferricyanide reduction.
Chromatophores of Rhodospirillum rubrum and spinach chloroplasts contain firmly bound ATP that is rapidly labeled along with ADP in the presence of 32Pi and endogenous nucleotides. The labeling is not entirely dependent on light. In chloroplasts three types of bound ATP can be defined
